We encourage the development of theory and musicianship skills from the earliest stages of instrumental learning.

The music theory lessons encourages students to learn about the foundations of music, in line with the ABRSM music theory criteria.  In general terms, music theory analyses the elements of music including harmony, rhythm, melody, structure, form, texture, dynamics, timbre, duration and pitch.  This enrichment will enhance the musical knowledge of all pupils.

Pupils studying a musical instrument will also benefit greatly from these sessions, as they will require Grade 5 Music Theory in order to progress to Grade 6 in ABRSM practical instrumental and vocal exams.  Pupils learn at their own pace through a variety of different teaching and learning methods.

As instrumental skills progress, development in music theory and musicianship becomes increasingly important in helping students to perform with sensitivity, understanding and confidence. The theory exams provide assessment of the theoretical knowledge necessary to become a well-rounded musician.

The music theory lessons are suitable not only for those students who are dedicated to passing their ABRSM Theory Exam, but for those who want to enjoy the journey to passing their exams. Students learn shortcuts of remembering key signatures, intervals and the tips of cracking the codes in music.
